Description

Hello all!
This is a recent data acquisition from the past week in my visit to a local dark site (Sandilands park) - the skies are quite dark here, around Bortle 2, so its well worth the 100 km drive to get out there.

Other images from this series includes these:

Aurora:

And M4:

Those images will give you an idea of the dark site and my strategy (avoid the clouds and aurora to the north).

M20, or NGC 6514) is also known as the Trifid Nebula and Skysafari tells me that its named for its three-lobed appearance. This object is an unusual combination of an open cluster of stars, an emission nebula, a reflection nebula, and a dark nebula that divides the emission nebula into three parts.

Its discovery was not by Messier, but rather by a bloke named Le Gentil ~ 1750.  Messier placed it in his catalogue in 1764, and Herschel gave it the name of Trifid nebula.  Located in proximity to M8 - the lagoon nebula.

Other notes:  I didn't get much time on this nebula, only 41 subs of 120 seconds, due to clouds, on both nights of July 1 and July 2.  This composition is my first multiple night effort.  Thanks for reading to the bottom!
